Storage solutions

There are hundreds of thousands of storage area networks (SAN) deployed today, however the opportunity and need is in the millions. The reason that there are still so relatively few SANs in the market is due primarily to the complexity, or perceived complexity, of storage. Storage systems are not so complex that end-user companies and their IT staff aren’t able to ultimately understand or manage them. Implementing a SAN today isn’t a “nobrainer” decision. The cost and complexity, or the perception thereof, results in many companies shrugging their already overburdened shoulders, concluding that what they have today is already good enough. So they do nothing, continue on with business as usual and put off the notion of implementing a SAN. The biggest barrier to entry for SAN deployments is inertia.

However, these dynamics are changing rapidly. We are moving towards the crossover point where the need outweighs the objections for a much larger audience of small and medium-sized businesses and organizations. The key to this is that the need is growing due to an escalating amount of data and market drivers, and the objections of cost and complexity are diminishing. There are next generation storage systems, available today, that are easy to manage and cost effective. Additionally, the pain of using only DAS (Direct Attach Storage) systems within customer data centers is becoming too acute to continue on this path. The reason that storage networks exist in the first place is to ultimately simplify the management of data. Storage networks provide consolidation of infrastructure, centralize data management and protection and can provide improvements in accessing and utilizing information.
